Do you know about the legend of coffee? Raw coffee seeds were kept as a secret inside Arab as a monopoly until 17th Century & only roasted seeds were exported to India. One saint named Baba Budan collected some seeds from there. Coming back to India, he planted the first coffee seeds in Chikmagalur in South India. Even today he is remembered by tourists & coffee lovers when they visit Baba Budan Hills of Western Ghats in Chikmagalur district of Karnataka.

Most of us are familiar with the terms cappuccino, latte, mocha, americano and espresso. Whenever we visit a coffee shop, we ask for one of them. These varieties of coffee vary slightly in ingredients or have different coffee making processes like instant or brewed, dripped or filtered. To be more specific, coffee is instant or traditional. Have you ever wondered which coffee is beneficial?

Caffeine Content: The caffeine content does vary in Espresso or Dripped & in Instant. Generally, traditional coffee has more caffeine than instant coffee; for example – an 8 oz cup of brewed coffee yields about 70 – 140 mg of caffeine whereas, an 8 oz cup of instant coffee contains roughly 30–90 mg of caffeine. However, this is a generalised data, which varies with brewing technique, roast level or bean type.

Chicory Content: In instant coffee, another concern is chicory, a pretty flowering plant. The root of chicory is roasted & grounded to be brewed with coffee in some parts of the world. Chicory is considered a cheaper substitute for coffee without any caffeine & naturally chicory mixed coffee can’t provide the best taste or benefits.

Single Origin: Coffee is grown in coffee estates located in three states of India: Karnataka, Kerala & Tamil Nadu. Can you trace your coffee? Do you know from which estate your coffee comes? Single origin coffee means which comes from one single geographical location. The commercial & instant coffee brands do not provide any information about the same, whereas the traditional coffee brands do.

Mixing Robusta & Arabica: Two well-known species of coffee are Arabica & Robusta; arabica is considered as superior, however robusta has a more bitter taste for its higher caffeine content. In some cases, cheaper robusta is mixed with arabica in instant coffee to make it bitterer to give a real feel of coffee to customers.

Health Benefits: Coffee is an accepted beverage all over the world for reducing stress & keeping us refreshed during a tough day. However, recent research has discovered various facts on coffee; it can fight against obesity, type-2 diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases. Only that cup of coffee brewed from roasted coffee beans can serve the purpose effectively.
