Looking around the world and news lines between loads of political debates, it is often not observed how environment is changing and how people are suffering because of these environmental changes. We might feel bad when we see the news but often fail to realise that our convenient life is contributing a lion share for this environmental changes. If we look around we will find numerous examples of damaging the environment and increasing toxicity in the survival elements. We have been so aggressive with our convenience that sometimes we forget to notice that habit; we take our convenient situation in society as granted. Even we forget to notice what harm we are causing in other’s life; that can be human, plants, cattle or even insects or towards air, soil and water.

Plastic is definitely the Super Hero when it comes to make life more convenient. We might find good plastic, bad plastic, food grade plastic, reusable plastic, recycled plastic but after all plastic is plastic. And to make plastic it requires oils. It is estimated that to make 30 million plastic bags it requires 12 million barrels of oil per year in US itself; whereas in India every day more than 15000 tonnes of plastic waste is generated and only a small percentage of plastic gets recycled. We do not want to grab your attention to the non- recycled plastic numbers and quantity. It is estimated that 100 million to 500 millions of carbon is released every year as a direct result of plastic manufacturing. That is equivalent of emission between 19 million to 92 million of vehicles on the road. So even if you do not use vehicles for your own transportation, still the plastic use can harm environment pretty heavily.

Another such example is Microbeads. There is mounting evidence that these microbeads are killing marine life and bringing harmful chemicals to food chain. For more information read the release on Popular Science article.

Life has moved towards only “Use & Through” for convenience. What is really shocking is that people are not yet ready to welcome the green initiatives. They are happy with their carbon footprints. Recently a survey done by ‘The Shelton Group’ in USA reveals a shocking fact. The survey polled 1,006 consumers across the country. It was found that 60 percent of Americans are looking for green products. But when a choice between their comfort, convenience and the environment was given, 38% of respondents said they would stick to their convenience, 35% said they’d prefer comfort and only 26% said they’d choose the environment. In India we do not conduct such survey, but in case if it is conducted the result will definitely open our eyes.

If we closely look at your lifestyle you will surely find that you are willing to consume or buy the right products. However you do not bother to ask or find a simple question that how the products are produced? One single question might change the entire prospective of the buying habit. Just imagine you do not know where and how the vegetable and fruits that you buy are grown! The clothes you wear, you do not know how and who made your clothes behind the big brands. The personal care that are supposed to take good care of your body and skin actually damages it because of harmful chemicals in it. Kitchen tools, crockery, washing powder, serving plates, tiffin boxes, water bottles and many more products can go into this list. It is estimated that there are 62000+ chemicals which are used in our day to day products. Every year there are 700+ new chemicals are added. But when it comes to regulations and ban chemicals that list does not even appears anywhere for consumers to see.

Big brands, big industries and catchy advertisements drive the consumers to buy more convenient products. However it is not a matter of debate but a true fact that they hide all the required information from the buyers. On the other hand looking the growth in organic and natural product production we can say people are getting more aware of their lifestyle and purchases. Consumers are looking for more and more organic, natural and eco-friendly alternatives at higher price. Natural living is just the new trend that consumers are willing to accept to find an alternative. Organic food sector has an annual growth rate of 25%; organic and natural cosmetic and personal care sector is also booming. Organic cotton clothing sector has seen major demand in the market across world. Even eco-friendly home and kitchen tools are already in demand.

So to contribute towards wellness and goodness we all should try to live naturally and try to reduce the use of plastic as much as possible, try to look for an alternative living, need to ask question to your manufacturer, and ask how the product is produced. The mother Earth has given everything in adequate quantity to live us naturally. So a little bit of sacrifice of convenience might help someone to live healthy and longer.
