For centuries, natural jute has been an integral part of the culture of East Bengal and some parts of West Bengal, precisely in the southwest of Bangladesh. Since the seventeenth century the British started trading in jute. During the reign of the British Empire jute was also used in the military. British jute barons grew rich processing jute and selling manufactured products made from jute. Dundee Jute Barons and the British East India Company set up many jute mills in Bengal and by 1895 jute industries in Bengal overtook the Scottish jute trade. Many Scots migrated to Bengal to set up jute factories. More than a billion jute sandbags were exported from Bengal to the trenches during World War I and also exported to the United States southern region to bag cotton.

Today we are introducing natural jute mats for various usages at home. These Jute mats are all handmade by local artisans basically from the state of West Bengal. Earthen Living has visited their place of living and after seeing their skill of this art has decided to introduce them in the marketplace. Individually Earthen Living visited many places before picking up those right and needy artisans to help than promoting their products to Earthen Store Platform. It took a huge time to make this collaboration.

Plastic definitely makes life easy but it comes with a cost of life in different forms. It costs our lives before it is used and even after it is discarded from home. Even some plastic mats emits invisible fume which pollute the inside air at home. In order to reduce plastic mats loads from home, jute mats are the only substitutes looking at its dynamics of use and past history.

Natural Jute is recyclable, biodegradable and eco friendly vegetable fiber. Jute needs very low pesticide and fertilizer; so it is healthy for the soil, those farmers & the environment too.

The jute fiber comes from the stem and ribbon (outer skin) of the jute plant. The fibers are first extracted by retting. The retting process consists of bundling jute stems together and immersing them in slow running water. There are two types of retting: stem and ribbon. After the retting process, stripping begins; women and children usually do this job. In the stripping process, non-fibrous matter is scraped off; then the workers dig it and grab the fibers from the jute stem.
