Great naturalist Henry David Thoreau said “What is the use of a house if you haven’t got a tolerable planet to put it on?”

It’s been almost one year; we all are still eagerly waiting for an edge to normalcy in a dubious demeanor. The general perception of introducing COVID-19 vaccine is as if reading a newspaper in complete darkness. Prolonged lockdown has pushed all of us towards boredom of life to such an extent that even the couch potatoes yearn for going out. The angst of COVID infection has made us to breathe through protective gears and wash hands uncountable times in a day. The school going kids are stricken with strange physiological agony and the adults are stuck in depression. Words like ‘quarantine’, ‘lockdown’, ‘thermal screening’, ‘physical distancing’, and ‘isolation’ have become the most fearful and annoying words of 2020.

If you kindly and closely observe, you will find that even in times of crisis Mother Earth has taken care. Every morning the sun rises and every evening the sun sets, season changes, rain drops, wind blows, flowers bloom, birds sing to give us strength and make us feel we are still alive during this tough time. At times you might have tried to listen to the wind, look up at the stars and moon alone. It reminds us of the vastness of the Earth and we are part of something much larger than ourselves. Every moment has the potential to remind us of just how deeply connected we are to everyone and everything on this Earth. It is just a matter of remembering where to look.

As an individual we all are very sensitive about our own home. But when it comes to Mother Earth only a negligible percentage of people actually do care. Rest behaves like a demon towards Mother Earth. At one side Earth’s mysterious beauty is deeply praised and on the other side it is being destroyed. If you want to know the reason you must look into your trash bags before you discard it from your home. You will find the answers. Great naturalist Henry David Thoreau said “What is the use of a house if you haven’t got a tolerable planet to put it on?”

Let’s think from another perspective. The above example reveals individual maltreatment towards the Planet, but things can get nastier when the same practice is performed by large scale industries that are big like large institutions. They release toxic gases like Sulphur Dioxide and Carbon Monoxide to air; let out chemical dyes, fertilisers, heavy metals, even nuclear wastes to water. The consequences on land, ground and surface water are very well known. An astonishing fact is every litre of waste water discharged by our industry pollutes eight times the quantity of freshwater. Not only the living beings on the world are suffering, but also the future generation is not spared as the pollutants can cause miscarriages and birth defects. These all are the outcomes of our endless harm and wrongdoings towards the Earth.

Though this pandemic has made us go through some disheveled time, but it has coached us with some valuable life lessons to help us to make this earth a better place to live in. The hitches that the pandemic has caused can’t be undone, but we can surely fend off any situation similar to this. Leading an Eco Lifestyle won’t cost us much than the present Eco-destructive life. Investing on healthy lifestyle looks way much better than to repent in later phase of life. It is said “Take care of the small things and big things will fall into place.” Here are some of the practices which can convert this Earth a safer place to breathe in for all.

Segregation of Waste Segregation of waste is necessary before disposing it. This practice will reduce the amount of waste and it will be more simple to recycle and compost. Various types of wastes are there, like Dry, Wet and Hazardous waste. The Dry wastes like flowers, papers and metals can be recycled. Vegetables, fruit peels, tea leaves, egg shells are Wet waste; they are good compost for kitchen garden. Remaining Hazardous wastes like e-waste, expired medicine should be disposed of daily.

Better Hygiene This word “hygiene” sounds very familiar and cinch but most of the people miss that X factor regarding what “hygienic living” actually converges into. It does not mean to clean the floor with a mop everyday and throwing waste in a dustbin. In a broader sense, the stuffs discarded everyday should not sow the seeds of pollution. Distinguish between biodegradable and non-biodegradable wastes, check whether any water is stagnant in the surroundings, and don’t allow leftover uncovered food to stopover. Hygienic living doesn’t only spotlight to keep the house clean; but it also focuses greatly to stay in a clean environment, with abundant drinking water, clean air and healthy lifestyle.

3 R’s Though they are written everywhere, but the practice of the civilized society doesn’t convey the message that they keep that warning in their mind in their real life. However there are easier ways to practise that. Kitchen mops and aprons can be sewn from damaged linens or textiles. Instead of throwing the kitchen wastes into drains and rivers, they can be turned into natural compost for kitchen garden. While buying things at any shop, make sure to take your own reusable containers and abhor asking for polyethylene containers.

Very simple and practical housekeeping methods are they, but they are always under hyped. They are mentioned and taught everywhere and unfortunately they are always overlooked. There are individuals, organisations and institutions that are in a mission to help people to be aware of the burning issue of this environment and inspire them to lead a sustainable life without compromising with the quality of the nature. We already owe a lot to our nature. If two more pennies can help the nature to heal, then it’s worth it.
